We developed a full-scale Training Pipelay Simulator / Work Station Mock-Up (WSMU) to enable efficient training and simulation for offshore operations. With this training solution, a benchmark was set for future training simulators in the offshore industry.
In the offshore energy industry, efficient training and simulation of personnel plays a crucial role in ensuring operational safety and minimizing vessel downtime. To improve crew training and reduce vessel downtime, Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) wanted to create a full-scale testing station that mirrors the workstation of their construction vessel, DCV Aegir.
They turned to us for this project to design, deliver and install a full-scale Work Station Mock-Up that mirrors real offshore operations. They needed a fully functional and realistic onshore training simulator that would replicate offshore conditions, allowing operators and technicians to train safely, test equipment and enhance performance before deployment offshore.
We designed and built a simulator on time and within budget, with the following solutions:
A design to handle pipeline production equipment weighing up to 4,000 kg
A high-precision alignment and welding system
Adaptable for pipe diameters between 6–28 inches at various laying angles
Key enhancements included using short pieces of pipe (PUPs) to save materials during training simulations
Each subsystem was redesigned to reflect the specific conditions encountered offshore. With this, instructors can effectively train personnel using a system that closely mimics actual vessel operations

Lower costs: less time needed for offshore training and certification
Enhanced safety: training takes place in a controlled environment
Reduced vessel downtime: offshore assets remain available for operations
