Flange Monopile Upending Tool

We designed the Monopile Lifting Tool, also known as Flange Monopile Upending Tool enabling more efficient and safer monopile installations in offshore wind farms. See also Y-Class Monopile Lifting Tool.

Scope

In offshore wind farm construction, installing monopiles is one of the most crucial steps. Operators require a tool that combines strength, efficiency, and ease of use. The tool must be robust enough to handle substantial loads, yet light enough to fit within the vessel’s crane capacity. For projects with flange diameters between 7.5 and 8 meters, a precise and reliable upending tool is essential to prevent downtime, delays, and potential damage to monopiles, which can be costly in both time and resources.

Challenge

Traditional monopile handling tools may lack the combination of strength, precision, and flexibility required for large-scale offshore installations. Van Oord needed a tool that can:

  • Safely lift, upend, and downed heavy monopiles

  • Integrate seamlessly with other deck tools, such as monopile grippers

  • Provide safe, hands-free operations

  • Minimizes surface damage to the monopile and flange

  • Be customizable for different project requirements and vessel layouts

Solution

We developed the Y-Class, a state-of-the-art monopile upending tool designed for large-scale monopile installations. The Y-1600 handles a Safe Working Load (SWL) of up to 1,600 tons while remaining lightweight at 60 tons, enabling efficient handling even in challenging side leads. The tool integrates with the deck spread, paired with other crucial tools such as the monopile gripper.

Key features:

  • Efficient handling and safety: tugger points rated for 25-ton loads, Quick Connector compatibility, fixed locking system, remote control with manual override, and visual indicators with sensors and cameras for real-time monitoring

  • Enhanced protection: protective materials safeguard the monopile and flange surfaces, minimizing wear and ensuring durability

  • Optional upgrades: seafastening cradle, stabbing frame, and upend bucket allow for versatile configurations to meet specific project needs

  • Optimized for uptime: lightweight, robust construction and streamlined production reduce installation time and help ensure timely project starts

Key specifications:

  • Flange Diameter Compatibility: 7.5 – 8 meters

  • SWL: 1,600 tons

  • Upending Load: 900 tons

  • Tool Weight: 60 tons

Benefits

  • Safe and efficient operations – controlled monopile positioning reduces risk and ensures smooth handling

  • Reduced downtime – lightweight, high-precision design facilitates faster installation

  • Versatile and customizable – optional upgrades allow adaptation to different vessels and project requirements

  • Durable and reliable – protective materials and robust construction extend tool life

  • Proven performance – successfully deployed on the Sofia wind farm without downtime, improving handling efficiency
